CHESTER SPRINGS, PA – Construction has begun on the former Upattinas School building located at 429 Greenridge Road. The farmhouse on the property is being converted into 5 residential units, ranging in size from 1,800 to 2,500 square feet. New entryways and garages will be added to the building. No construction will be conducted on the gym building at this time.
This farmhouse on Greenridge Road is designated as an historic resource and is listed in the Historic Resources Inventory of Upper Uwchlan Township. The Georgian-style stone house has been altered many times since its original construction. The current adaptation of the farmhouse has been permitted under the Upper Uwchlan Township Adaptive Reuse for Historic Preservation ordinance. The ordinance outlines specific regulations under which designated historic structures may be adaptively reused for purposes of viable ongoing preservation of the historic property. The developer of the farmhouse is seeking to maintain and restore many of the historic details of the house, such as gabled windows and tiled mantelpieces.
Most residents know this property as the old Upattinas School, a private school which operated out of the farmhouse between 1978 and 2014. What many may not know is that the property was formerly home to another learning institution, The Greenbank School, beginning in the early 1960s. Warwick Land Development, which owns and is adapting the building, has named the new residential units “Greenbank Cottages,” an homage to the building’s former purpose and life.
