CHESTER SPRINGS, PA – At their meeting on May 20, 2019, and after undertaking the required competitive bidding process, the Board of Supervisors awarded new contracts for trash and recycling removal in the Township. In years past, the Township had used a single hauler for both solid waste and recyclables. Beginning August 1, 2019, there are separate haulers for these two contracts: Recyclables are collected by A.J. Blosenski. Solid waste (trash) and yard waste are collected by Advanced Disposal.
The new contracts took effect on August 5 and 6, 2019.
Why did the Township change haulers? Awarding two separate contracts results in a savings of $40,000 over 3 years. The goal of the Board of Supervisors is to ensure the long-term sustainability of these services without increases in program costs to our residents.
Will the pickup schedule change? No, neither the pickup zones nor the collection days changed. Zone 1 pickup continues to be Monday. Zone 2 pickup continues to be Tuesday.
Bulk waste is collected on the third pickup date each month. Yard waste is collected on 36 Wednesdays throughout the year. To schedule pickup of freon items, please call the Township at 610-458-9400.
Please refer to and keep handy this calendar - a 17-month overview of pickup days. Dates are subject to change. Please refer to the Township website and sign up for calendar notifications at upperuwchlan-pa.gov/NotifyMe.
Won’t an additional hauler mean that more trucks are driving on the roads each week? No. Trash and recycling are already being collected by separate trucks, so this did not change the number of trips that trucks take down our roads each week.
The Township worked with the teams from A.J. Blosenski and Advanced Disposal to make the transition as seamless as possible for our residents. Here are some things you should know:
Advanced Disposal will not be running an identical route as the previous hauler. The trash truck might arrive a little earlier or a little later than you were used to. To guarantee collection, put your Toters curbside the night before scheduled collection.
Both haulers use an automated truck to collect waste. To facilitate collection, Toters must be placed at least 3 feet apart and away from mailboxes, cars, and obstacles.
Don’t overload your yard waste bags. Yard waste must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or open containers. Do not use your UUT Toters for yard waste, and don’t overload bags or bins. Do not fill bins or bags with wet material or dirt. Bins or bags containing non-approved waste will not be collected and will be marked with an orange non-collection sticker.
Recycle Right! Many paper, plastic, and metal materials are recyclable – but some aren’t! Review the Township’s Recycle Right flyer for details about which items are acceptable. Plastic bags are NOT accepted; Place materials directly in the bin. If your recyclables are contaminated with trash, the hauler will not collect them, and will mark the items or bins with an orange non-collection sticker.
